who we are

The Cyclo Centre

Providing assistance to the urban poor in Cambodia

Cyclos (pronounced see-cloe) are an integral part of the Phnom Penh landscape. These iconic vehicles, first introduced in 1936, remain one of the best and most economical ways to see the city. Cyclo drivers, however, are among the poorest of the urban poor in Cambodia. The Cyclo Centre is a local NGO providing basic support and social services to the drivers. The exact number of cyclo drivers in Phnom Penh is not known because of the transient nature of the work, but we have nearly 1,400 registered members.

what we do

We provide a place where cyclo drivers can meet, share ideas and access information and educational programs as well as a range of services - all provided free-of-charge - including washing facilities, medical care, English language lessons, programs on work-skills and money management and social activities.

We organize fundraising cyclo rallies that stretch from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, Kompong Cham and Prey Veng. The events also aim to raise awareness about the situation of cyclo drivers, especially in the provinces, and advocate for issues affecting them. Partnering with tour companies, restaurants and bars in Phnom Penh, we also provide cyclo tours on request with a small percentage of the fee going to our Centre for administration.

So the next time you're in Phnom Penh, take it easy, take a cyclo. Not only will you be doing yourself a favor, you will be helping create a better life for cyclo drivers.
